The Warrior Spirit

Sebastien Gignac

People who are training with kettlebells should not only think about lifting the weight 3 to 5 sets of 5 reps, or a simple 20 two hands swings and that’s it. If they did, they would be better off doing it in a gym with those 100 pound cardio gurus. You must carry the philosophy of what kettlebells are really meant for: to forge Warriors! In the ancient time, Warriors were not only good to handle weapons, but they were strong, fast and could combine endurance and explosiveness. They were fearsome in bare hand fights and aces in the throwing of a javelin. To survive the urban jungle you too must be able to combine a variety of techniques as well as bodyweight and joint mobility exercises. Yes, you want to be strong, but you want to be able to keep going on no matter what and then strike back again like a tiger.

Here is a simple routine that will make you understand better. It is done with a 24kg KB, it’s essential to use this weight so that you can work on your strength as well as your endurance.

- Grab your 24kg KB and go for 15 two hands swings
- From there, clean the bell and push press it 2 times holding it over your head the second time
- Go down Turkish Get Up style
- Laying on the floor, press the KB 3 times
- Get up TGU style and back down
- Press it again 3 times and then back up TGU style
- Rack the weight and squat it 5 times
- Go for another 15 two hands swings
- SWITCH ARMS!
- Continue with the same routine with your opposite arm
- Instead of finishing the routine with 15 two hands swings go for 40 ( 5 snatch left, switch, 5 snatch right, switch, 5 snatch left, … , and so on till you reach 40 REPS!)
- Take a break for less than 5 mins and go for 1 or 2 more routines.

This training will enhance your endurance, your explosiveness, strength, as well as a little bit of mental toughness each time you’ll want to quit!
