Canadian Kettlebell Coach Profile - Tyler Touchette

This month I sat down with one of Canada's first Canadian Kettlebell Coaches, Tyler Touchette to find out more about him and the kind of training he offers. Each month we will profile a new coach and highlight their unique background and the kind of training that they offer.

Tell me a little something about your background and how you came to be
interested in personal training?

I've been working out since I was 15 years old and playing sports since I
was like 4 or something. I think I owe this one to my first weight set - the
hulkamainia workout - yes, I was little hulkster. I have a degree from Brock
University in Recreation.

How long have you been a training people and what types of certification
do you hold?

I have been training for about 4 years now. I am ACE certified personal
trainer, special populations consultant (dealing with all types of problems
like cancer, aids, asthma, fibromalygia, etc), scientific core conditining
specialist, and most importantly - CANADIAN KETTLEBELL CERTIFIED!!

Who are your typical clients? What are they looking for?

My clients range from couch potatoes to pregnant women to elderly to elite
athletes. The majority of my clients are women. My wife is not bitter -
yet!!!

What is your approach to fitness? How do you define a fit person?
Fit in my mind?? I believe there are 3 major contributors to being fit. 1.
Mental - If your mind and emotions are not under control you are not fit.
Read - Learn - Whatever!! People tend to have what I call the ZOMBIE
SYNDROME, they work - the come home - they watch tv - they start over!! 2.
Spiritual - Believe in something - something positive!! Everybody needs
something to look forward to. 3. Physical - Take care of your body -
Workout, walk, watch your diet, your sleep, your injuries.

My approach is simple. I want all of my clients to feel good, to walk with
their heads held high. Striving for the cover of a magazine is the last
thing I want my clients to go after. Feeling good about oneself and that you
are improving is what I strive for everyday. Lastly, I love to challenge
everybody including my self. Life is boring otherwise.

What drew you to Kettlebell training, both for your own training and as
a coach?

I knew from the second I seen kb's in action that they were the future. I
love old school - I hate machines and any type of easy was out. Once I felt
the immediate impact of the kb - I never looked back - I haven't ben in a
gym since and I'm in the best shape of my life.

What impact have Kettlebells had on helping you reach your fitness goals
and the goals of your clients?

Everybody reaches their goals faster with kb's. Kb's are fun because they
have this way of making you want to overcome all the different challenges
that are pretty much endless.

What do you think is the most essential quality(or attribute) a person
must have if they are to attain their goals.

Visualization of one's goal. You must see it before you do it!! You live
ONCE! You need to ask yourself - i if I got hit by a bus tomorrow, would I
be happy with how I've lived my life this far??

What qualities do you think a great personal trainer should possess?
MOTIVATION, EDUCATION, CONTINUIING EDUCATION, EMPATHY , FRIENDLINESS,
LEADERSHIP, DISCIPLINE, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY - PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH. THE
LAST THING SOMEONE WANTS IS A PERSONAL TRAINER WHO LOOKS LIKE HE JUST ROLLED
OUT OF 'ROTTIN RONNIES' WITH A 2 COMBOS TO GO!!!
