My weekend with a Montreal Madman!!

Tyler Touchette, ACE PT, SCCS, CKC, SPS

For those of you who don't know exactly who I am, which is all of you (this
is my first article), my name is Tyler Touchette and I along with three
others recently completed the first Canadian Kettlebell Instructors course
in Montreal this past weekend.

First, a brief history lesson:

Being an established personal trainer and fitness enthusiast I decided to venture off and search for a new way to work out that wasn't as boring as the same old gym scene that I've been accustomed to for well over ten years now. Around six months ago I was sesearching on the Internet and came across this bizarre form of weight lifting known as kettlebell training. I was intrigued immediately due to the fact that this form of training made sense the second I layed my eyes on it. It was like some genius came up with a way to simultaneously burn fat, increase flexibility, boost strength and endurance all in the same 30-minute routine. Whoever this genius was he's been dead for at least 300 years and maybe more. Kettlebells have been around for a long time and with the recent resurgence of "functional" training they are growing like never before.

I found myself so interested that I was almost in a panic to find one of these strange kettlebells. (Yes, I know I need to get a life.) Within a couple of days I found Shawn Mozen (Agatsu.com) in Montreal who just happened to have this miracle weight that I had dilligently searched high and low for. After purchasing the standard 36-pound beginners kettlebell, I began working out at home and practicing the many different and extremely challenging movements the kettlebell has to offer. After a week I was done with the gym and knew the kettlebell discipline (I like to call it that) was taking over my entire fitness regimen.

So I contacted Shawn about six months later and inquired about this upcoming Kettlebell Certification. My first question was, "No offense Shawn, but I've been using kettlebells for six months now and feel I know all the movements with strict form. Why do I need to get certified?" After all, I am a qualified trainer in many aspects of the fitness industry and have been working out for well over ten years, right? Wrong!! You ever notice every time you think you know something know one else knows, not only does someone else know but also they know a hell of allot more than you do!

Within the first five minutes of the Certification I had learned more than I've learned in the past year of research. After the first day I had trouble getting into my car due to the fact that it felt like someone had tied me up and hit me with a sledgehammer in every major muscle group in my body! As a group we worked out very hard with high intensity and most importantly we worked on form and how to teach the rest of the country just how amazing the kettlebell discipline is.

The second day we trained outside in the ever so popular West mount Park. Besides learning more form and many knew movements we also learned that every person in the Park or near it - wanted to know what exactly we were doing. Kettlebells draw your attention because any person can tell just by observing that kettlebell training is extremely effective, extremely challenging, and last but not least kettlebell training is allot of fun. There's nothing worse than yawning throughout exercise, aimlessly walking around like a robot while you complete your workout.

Day three, or the final day was just as interesting as the last two. We trained just as hard and intense always learning new movements and perfecting our form in order to teach it to whoever is out in the world desperately looking for an effective exercise routine that never loses its edge.

In short, the weekend was great and has given me a high level of confidence that I can't wait to extend to my existing clientele and whoever else I may encounter along the way. If you're the type of person who loves a challenge, who is sick of trying half-assed fitness routines and absurd diets; you are perfect for kettlebell training!!

Kettlebell training can be performed at home, outside, at the office, and in a brief time period. If you try kettlebell training once, and I mean once, you won't look back!!
